Wisconsin Jobless Payments Are $392,200 During May

Wisconsin paid $392,200 in jobless benefits during May, compared with $568,500 in April.

Benefits paid this May were well under half the benefits paid a year ago, in May 1950. Less than 6,600 workers were unemployed and claiming benefits in Wisconsin at the start of June.

Sheep Raisers Advised to Hold Wool Until July Wisconsin wool growers are advised to hold their wool until July. Wool prices, according to Art Pope, sheep specialists at the University of Wisconsin, will likely rise in July when the armed forces start buying again. Armed forces stopped their purchase program n march this year, causing wool prices to tumble.

Current prices now being paid by buyers are far below the calling level established by the OPS. Wool buyers cannot sell fleece above the OPS ceiling, but farmers can sell to buyers up to the OPS ceiling.

Pavilion Sold

Bernard Walter sold his dancing pavilion, located in what is named the Colby Park, to Leroy Thede, who has taken possession.

Mr. and Mrs. Walter and two children have moved to Marshfield, where they will live.

Sentence for man in crash

Steven P. Gaddis, 18, of rural Withee, was placed on two and a half years probation last week and ordered to jail fo five months after conviction stemming from, a fatal traffic accident in Abbotsford April 18.

Gaddis pled no contest to the Class D felony charge of negligent homicide in connection with the death of Patricia A. Potter, 27, Spencer. Circuit Judge Gary L. Carlson of Medford handeddown the sentence, which included an 18-month prison term which was stayed. Gaddis was also ordered to pay a fine of $2,000. Gaddis driving privileges were also revoked for one year, and he was ordered to pay court costs and participate in alcohol and psychiatric assessments.

Gaddis was driving his 1981 Firebird northbound on Hwy. 13 around 1:05 a.m. April 18. Gaddis’ vehicle was in the southbound lane when it struck the right side of a Volkswagen sport truck driven by Michael D. Potter, 32, Spencer. Mrs. Potter was a passenger. According to court reports, the Potters has just come from a restaurant in Abbotsford and one bar in Colby and was heading toward home when the accident occurred.

Officer William L. Hussong of the Abbotsford-Colby Police Department arrived at the scene of the crash on the south edge of Abbotsford about 1:07 a.m.
