Zero weather

For a brief time, snow and ice softened over the weekend, and Sunday was the mildest day experienced in weeks. The above freezing temperatures dropped to below zero on Tuesday, and on Wednesday morning there was the familiar 13 below.

As the sun advanced, the thermometer climbed, but couldn’t make it above zero. Rising temperatures were forecast.

Salvation Army needs funds

The appeal for the Salvation Army drive is urgent and, to date, the general response has not been good.

Any contribution, regardless of amount, is more than welcome as this year the Salvation Army, in addition to its regular relief and charity, is trying to establish a service center for the soldiers at Fort McCoy.

Money may be left at the Security State Bank, with Mrs. John Hutt, treasurer, or Mrs. Lowell Dorn, chairman of the local campaign.

Winter storm is blamed for county’s accidents

Last week’s snow storm was blamed for several accidents in Clark County, according to the sheriff’s report.

On Feb. 7, Jayne M. Fleming, Thorp, struck a squad car driven by Officer Del Fatti. The Fleming vehicle slid towards Fatti, who attempted to avoid it by going into the ditch. The Fleming vehicle struck the rear end of the squad, damaging both vehicles. Officer Fatti and a passenger in the Fleming auto were treated for bumps and bruises and minor injuries. The accident happened on Hwy 29.

A horse caused an accident in the Town of Withee on Road No. 8. It was struck when it jumped into the path of a vehicle driven by Annette M. Kostick, Lublin.

Injuries to the passenger were reported in an accident Feb. 6 in the Town of Weston on Hwy 73. A vehicle driven by Virgil Jinkerson, Humbird, was southbound. According to the reports, the driver indicated that a vehicle driven by Reginald Barnes, Greenwood, was halfway into Jinkerson’s land, and as he swerved to avoid the Barnes vehicle, he lost control and struck a rail bridge. The passenger in the Jinkerson vehicle was taken to Memorial Hospital at Neillsville by ambulance for treatment of head lacerations.

Vehicles driven by William Isenberger, Thorp, and Frank Jacque, Thorp, collided on Road No. 7 in the Town of Reseberg on Feb. 9. Isenberger was stopped on the roadway to check a disabled vehicle and was struck from behind by the Jacque vehicle. Jacque said it was too icy to stop.
