A dozen “FOODstruction” displays filled the RCU Community Room at the Colby Community Library (CCL) since the beginning of November. Food sculptures, constructed using items purchased and donated to the food pantries in Colby and Unity, were voted on by the public last week.

The Nicolet Bank “Castle” garnered the most votes and was awarded first place. A “Salute to the Military” fireplace and American flag by BBD Sports Shop earned second place by the voters. AbbyBank’s “Pumpkin Pie” was voted third place. Loos Machine’s “Christmas Train by the Fireplace” placed fourth in the voting. Each winner earned a food trophy, donated to the pantries, in their names. There were 177 votes cast for favorite sculptures.

In addition to businesses constructing the four winning displays, other participants were Thrivent Action Team, St. Mary CHSA, Friends of the CCL, In Memory of Pearl Vorland, Glorycroft Fibers, Colby Lions, Colby Community Library, and Colonial Health and Rehab.

The food was delivered on the morning of November 21 to CUP Food Pantry, located in Zion Lutheran Church in Colby, and Trinity Food Pantry in Unity. The food arrived just in time for Thanksgiving for area families in need of help during the holiday season. Amazingly, when the twelve sculptures were dismantled, the count of the number of food items to be donated was 2,012.

“This is the third food sculpture event hosted by the CCL and sponsored by Thrivent Action Teams. It is definitely a win-win event; our patrons are amazed and enjoyed looking at the creative displays, and the food pantries are elated at the number of food items received to stock their shelves,” according to CCL Director Vicky Calmes. “Thanks to all who helped make FOODstruction 2022 a success.”
