Ava Decker named Lions’ Student of the Quarter
Abbotsford High School senior Ava Decker has been named the Abbotsford Lions Club Student of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of the 2020-21 school year.
Decker carries a rigorous class schedule that includes written communication, Foundations of Art & Design, calculus, publishing, student teacher aide, treble choir, and mixed choir. She has participated in many co-curricular activities, including National Honor Society, Student Senate, FBLA, BLAST, FFA, and Spanish Club. She is a member of the volleyball and track teams.
Volleyball coach Lee Schreiber highly recommended her for the Student-of-the-Quarter award.
“Ava is extremely responsible; not only is she accountable, she is a true leader among her peers,” Schreiber stated. “I have watched her develop into a confident, capable individual. She was voted all-conference honorable mention her sophomore year, second-team allconference her junior year, and selected captain of her volleyball team her senior year. I am impressed by her leadership and organizational skills; being detailoriented has allowed her to maintain a busy, active schedule. Those abilities will serve her well in the future.”
Decker’s volunteerism attests to her belief in community service. She has been actively involved by assisting at the Abbotsford Lion’s brunches, reffing JV and working alumni volleyball tournaments, making tie blankets for the hospital and raking leaves for community service projects.
When asked to identify an outstanding feature of the community, Ava applauds her school.
“One aspect of Abbotsford High School that I find amazing is the inclusivity and drive to help students. The staff and administration do a great job of accommodating every students’ needs. They added an anonymous tip line to the school website where students can ask for help; this service provides basic hygiene products and school supplies for students who can’t afford it. The school also does a great job providing ways students can learn if they don’t speak English or have a learning disability.”
When asked to define a major world problem, Decker responded, “The problem I would confront would be equality for men and women. It is a huge issue that women are not awarded the same opportunities as men in the workplace and everyday life. There is still a salary gap between genders, even when women are doing the exact job as men. Another huge issue is the rights given to men that women simply don’t get. Choices for women’s bodies are dictated by the government; however, men never have their rights at risk. This is a problem I care deeply about and would change.”
Ava works at McDonald’s. After graduation, she plans to attend UW-LaCrosse, majoring in psychology and sociology with plans to counsel people with mental health issues.
Ava is the daughter of Scott and Michelle Decker of Abbotsford.
