The Colby Community Library is getting ready for spring-like weather to arrive. A variety of gardening books and magazines are ready for checkout while you dream of the planting season ahead.

People with big hearts once again made the CCL’s service projects for 2021 huge successes.

TheMarshfieldMedicalCenter(MMC) received 147 Courage Capes and 114 Surgical Youth Caps for the Pediatrics Department from the Maddie Thums Memorial “Off-Site” Sew-a-thon.

The Make-A-Difference Day (MADD) at-home project produced 87 Fidget Quilts and 52 Twiddle Muffs for patients requiring dementia and Alzheimer therapies. Sixty people sewed, knit, or crocheted items at home and then brought them to the CCL to create the 400 items donated to the MMC.

Logo contest

The Friends of the CCL is sponsoring a logo contest. Pick up an entry blank at the library or consult the CCL website.

The contest is open to both adults and children. The logo design should be limited to two colors and be easily replicated for printing on t-shirts and canvas bags.

The winner will receive a logo prize package of a shirt and bag of his or her choice. Entry blanks are due Friday, May 14, at 5 p.m. (Email or drop off the form.) The plan is to have new logo apparel available for purchase beginning June 1.

Clearance sale

In May, a clearance sale will be held for remaining CCL apparel and bags. Check out the selection and money-saving prices. The sale is limited to the current stock; no orders will be taken.

National Library Month

National Library Month (NLM) is proving to be popular with CCL patrons.

Over 300 “Library Users are Happy Campers” trivia slips are currently entered in the drawing for outdoorsy-type prizes. Several lucky winners, drawn from the correctly answered slips, will be notified in early May for the chance to select a prize.

Crafts

“Take and Make” crafts for May include button lid fridge magnet snails, recipe/photo holder flowerpots, and rolled tube insects. Craft kits are free; choose your favorite each time you visit.

Games and Fun in ‘21

The featured “Games and Fun in ’21” game in May is Pictionary. Find many books on painting, drawing and sketching displayed this month, along with a special area of animated movies.

Mental health grant

A Casey Lee Blume Memorial Foundation, Inc. grant was awarded to the CCL. Books on mental health for children were purchased and will be on display during May to support Mental Health Awareness Month.

Bingo

It is not too late to join in the bingo reading and movie challenge for teens and adults at the CCL. Pick up bingo cards and play all year long, as the challenge runs through Dec. 30. There will be a drawing for Abby/Colby Chamber Certificates for winners.

Forward Bank is collecting books, movies, and puzzles for the Cheese Days Book Sale. Bring items to Forward Bank during regular business hours.

No VHS, magazines, or Reader’s Digest Condensed Books will be accepted. Do not bring moldy, torn, water damaged or musty books. Also, before donating items from garage sales, price tags need to be removed.

Summer reading program

The answer to the most frequently asked question is: “Yes, there will be a summer reading program at the CCL.”

During these “different” times, the program will have a twist, but it will offer many opportunities for educational fun and prizes. Watch for details in brochures available mid-May. They will be sent home with Colby School District students. Others enrolled in virtual/home schools/academies are encouraged to visit the library for details. Watch for information on the Colby Community Library website and Facebook pages, too.

There will also be a teen program this summer. Registration runs June 1 through June 19 for ages 3-19. For those under the age of 3, the CCL offers the 1,000 to 4,000 Books Before Kindergarten programs year-round.

The CCL will be closed for Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 29, through Monday, May 31. Watch for expanded summer hours and up to date COVID-19 precautions beginning in June.
