National forest staff urges safe snowmobiling

As the outlook for snowmobile trail conditions improves for the season, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest encourages riders to recreate responsibly. The forest recommends that riders put safety first and consider weather and trail conditions when planning rides.

Many snowmobile trails on the forest remain closed due to insufficient snow and some lakes and swampy areas that are not fully frozen. Riders can check up-to-date trail conditions through the Travel Wisconsin Snow Report at https://www.travelwisconsin.com/snowreport/ snowmobile.

“We look forward to a successful snowmobile season on the forest,” said Chad Jacobson, West Zone recreation program manager. “At this point, we’re just waiting for adequate snowfall and trail conditions that will accommodate safe, enjoyable rides.”

Area snowmobile clubs have been working to clear trees and other debris from trails. However, riders should use extra caution, especially early in the season as weak trees can easily succumb to the weight of heavy snowfalls and create new trail hazards.

The forest may temporarily close or detour some routes in areas of active timber sales. Riders should remain aware of their surroundings, pay attention to route signage and stay on designated trails. County snowmobile trail maps are available through the forest’s website. fs.usda.gov.
