Fourth graders at Medford Area Elementary School write letters opposing littering

Student teacher Sarah Lundy is working with Rachel Mildbrand’s 4th grade class at Medford Area Elementary School to learn about persuasive writing. The students selected the topic of littering and submitted the following essays for publication:

Littering

By Kamiya Do you know how much of the Earth is filled with trash? Here are some reasons I think we should not litter.

There are 5.25 trillion Pieces of trash in the oceans. Boat lanes are covered in trash, a lot of sea animals have died from digesting trash and eating trash.Which is another reason I think we should not litter.

Another reason I think we should not litter is because it is harmful to animals. For example: one night me and my mom were driving to my grandma’s house and we saw a raccoon eating a plastic straw. From the trash which is why I think we should not litter.

Do you think we should still litter? I know I do not think we should litter.

Littering needs to stop

by Eli Imagine an entire ocean filled with litter the size of two Texas’s of trash and so many animals getting hurt by all of the garbage that’s sad. Littering needs to stop because it will destroy our Earth, it looks bad, and it hurts animals.

One reason littering needs to stop is because if you litter, the next month you go on a walk or drive on a street there will be a pile as tall as mount Everest.

Another reason littering needs to stop is because if you litter it will blow away and land into the ocean and a couple days after it gets in the ocean a turtle or other sea creature will get it and have to go to a vet and have surgery and most don’t survive sadly.

The last reason you should not litter is because it soon will destroy our earth, if you do not stop we will have to start wearing space helmets so we can survive.

Please just please never litter if you want a happy life. If you litter you are going to have to go to court.

Don’t Litter

By Carter Imagine all the garbage on a road. I think there should be no littering because it kills animals and it is bad for the environment.

No one should litter because litter kills animals. For example, when turtles eat plastic or they get stuck in it. There is a lot of garbage in the ocean. For example there are 5.25 trillanes in the ocean.

The great pacific garbage patch takes up the size of two Texas. No one should litter because it is bad for the environment. There is pollution in the air in rivers and lakes.

No one should litter because it kills animals and is bad for the environment. That’s why I think no one should litter in oceans and on land.

Stop Littering

by Annalee Do you think we should stop littering? I do because it hurts the animals, it makes the ocean look bad and it makes the earth not look good.

Imagine an ocean full of trash. I think we should stop littering because if the animals live in the ocean then they might come up on land and the animals think the trash is food and eat it. They could get really hurt and might not be able to go to their homes.The animals could also die if they do not get untangled.

Another reason why we should not litter is because the ocean can get full of trash. Have you ever looked up how much trash is in the ocean? Well I have and there is about 5 million pieces of trash in the ocean. Here is another reason why we should not litter is because it is bad for the earth. To clean up litter it costs about 11 million a year. It is a breeding ground for many germs and pathogens. Trash attracts animals and it will make a pill of animals in one spot.

I would like to make it so I do not have to see one more piece of trash on the EARTH.

We Need To Stop Littering

By Kyra Imagine, the world was covered in trash, and you couldn’t even see the ground! Littering is very bad for the environment and people too. And this is what could happen in the future, if we don’t do something about littering.

We need to stop littering because it is bad for our health. People who live in polluted areas are 20% more likely to die due to lung cancer then people who don’t live in polluted areas.

We need to stop littering because it is also bad for animals. Many animals die every year because of pollution over 1 million land animals and 10,000 aquatic animals to be more precise.

We need to stop littering because it is bad for the environment. Pollution can kill trees by killing living tissue, and it is a commonly known fact that we need trees for oxygen, so we can breath.

In conclusion, pollution is bad for many things, including people. Make sure you pick up your garbage, and save our world! Will you help?

We Need To Stop Littering

by Aubree Have you ever picked up trash? I have. Did you know that 5.25 trillion trash is in the ocean? I think we need to stop littering because the world is going to be full of trash, the world is getting destroyed, and some animals eat litter and get sick. We need to stop littering because the world is going to be full of trash! If we litter, that’s unhealthy for the world. We should not litter because I don’t think anyone wants to wake up one day and look outside and trash is everywhere! We should not litter because imagine someones going to go on a walk and sees a whole bunch of trash so it changes their mind and it will with lots of other people too!

Another reason we need to stop littering because the world is getting destroyed. The world is getting destroyed because so many people litter! The world is getting destroyed by trash so much that landfills are HUGE! For example, in the landfill 728,000 trash goes in it per day that’s enough to fill 63,000 garbage trucks! The world is getting destroyed so much I bet 5,000+ people pick up trash per day.

My last reason we need to stop littering is because some animals eat it and get sick. People litter so much that some animals run off or don’t have a home and eat it such as plastic some animals die from eating that! For example, think of the ocean, all of the fish/animals in the water with all the trash that turtles eat, sharks eat, and many more. My last reason is that if animals that eat it and dont have a home and run away from their mom and dad, who’s going to take care of them when they get sick?

In conclusion this proves that trash is bad for the environment. We need to stop littering because the world is going to be full of trash, the world is getting destroyed, and some animals eat it and get sick. If you are going on a walk some time I would advise you to take a plastic bag and pick up some trash and help out the world!

Don’t litter

By Carter Imagine an island was full of plastic and garbage. Well if you litter you help this happen. It makes the world look bad, hurts wildlife and it’s bad for the environment.

For example it makes the world look bad. I live right next to a highway and I went outside to play and I saw so much garbage in my backyard.

Another reason why it hurts wildlife. I once saw a turtle on the news and it got poisoned by garbage. Fact animals die because they can’t digest the plastic.

This shows it’s bad for the environment because. Once I saw on the news plants got killed by garbage cause it was under the garbage. That is why you shouldn’t litter!
