Choosing the right homebuilder
Because April is New Homes Month, the Wisconsin Builders Association (WBA) is highlighting tips to empower homeowners in choosing their builder and protecting their, often times, most expensive asset.
“Home builders use similar tools and materials, however not all professionals are alike when it comes to training and customer service,” said Jim Doering, WBA president. “Building a new home is a significant investment of time and money, so finding a builder whose business approach aligns with your preferences, is critical to ensuring the process goes smoothly.”
During first meetings with a home builder, a homeowner will be asked questions about the dream home they want to build, but it is also imperative for the homeowner to ask the builder questions about their professional experience, to help determine if they are the right builder for them.
The following are some questions homeowners should consider, when searching for a homebuilder who fits their needs: • Can you provide your Dwelling Contractor and Dwelling Contractor Qualifier Certification?
• How long have you been in business?
• Can you provide names and phone numbers of both past customers, and people with whom you work?
• Have you ever been sued; are there any liens against properties you have built?
• Can you provide a sample contract?
• What type of warranty do you offer?
• Are you a member of a trade association and/or hold any industry designations?
• What will communication be like through the process?
Last but not least, homeowners should be sure to walk through homes of their potential home builders, either through model homes or by utilizing the local Parade of Homes in their area.
