You’re not afraid, are you?

Now in its 16th year, the annual Haunted Trail behind Lake Holcombe School, is set to be even spookier than usual. Taking place Friday, Oct. 20, and Saturday, Oct. 21, beginning at 7 p.m., both days, the trail delights children and adults with its chilling atmosphere.
Obviously, the trail is filled with screams, scary characters easily recognizable from new and old cinema, and plenty of laughs along the way. But, what is the purpose of the trail?
“I think many don’t realize why we do what we do,” said trail director Joy Dain. “This is not just about the volunteers loving Halloween, but is about helping provide for the Lake Holcombe students, when the school budget won’t stretch far enough.”
Over the years, thanks to donations from local businesses, concession stand sales and ticket proceeds, the trail group, sponsored by the Lake Holcombe Booster Club, has been able to support field trips, uniforms for sports teams and other wishlist items.
“We’ve also helped out a couple other area school districts, whose students volunteered on the trail for us,” said Dain. “It’s important to all of us involved in the group, to give back where we can.”
More volunteers are always needed in the woods to scare people, along with set-up and tear-down of the trail route. Some of the scenes – which may or may not require animatronics – are quite intricate, and demand many hours and hands to make it a success. If anyone is interested in helping out, in any way, they can contact Dain, at 715-828-2014.
While some toddlers adore the thrilling trail, it can be too intense for those with sensory issues or who are younger, so it’s recommended that children be accompanied by an adult and be at least 12 years of age.
“Year after year, we hear that we have one of the best haunted walks around,” said Dain. “That drives us on to be even better than before.”
