Tips when considering investing in private solar installations
Installing private rooftop or other on-property solar panels is becoming increasingly more popular for home and business owners across Wisconsin and Michigan. To aid customers in their decision making, Xcel Energy offers tips to customers before signing agreements with companies that sell solar panels.
“We want to make sure our customers have all the information needed and understand the policies related and timelines related to connecting these private solar panels to the grid prior to making a purchase or signing an agreement,” said Brian Elwood, general manager, Customer and Community Services for Xcel Energy.
Elwood said it’s important for customers to contact Xcel Energy before finalizing a deal, be aware that the system they are purchasing must be compatible with the Xcel Energy’s grid and to know the rates that are in place. Xcel Energy does not market rooftop or on-property solar arrays and is not in partnership with companies marketing solar systems directly to customers.
Xcel Energy’s rates are regulated by the Public Service Commissions of Wisconsin and Michigan and customers who wish to connect private solar arrays to the company’s grid for backup or to sell surplus energy should consider:
• A private solar array will decrease the amount of electricity purchased from their electric utility provider. How much of a home or building’s electricity needs are met by solar power depends on how much the PV system produces and how much electricity is used.
• There may be tax credits or other financial incentives that offset the initial cost.
• Solar policies vary greatly by state. More detail can be found at https://wi.my.xcelenergy.com/s/ renewable/third-party-providers. Inquiries can also be made through email to SolarProgramWI@xcelenergy. com
