Walkers brave rain, cold to support area cancer patients
BUURRRR…………………the weather definitely did not feel like summer, or even spring, but the 8th annual Taylor County Moving for a Cure went on anyway at the Medford City Park on Friday evening, May 19. With the monies raised both leading up to and the evening of the event, the Committee expects to provide 43 individuals with $1,000 stipends.
“This number is up from stipends provided last year. The Committee is very proud to help our community members going through cancer treatments,” said Carmen Thiede, Committee Chair.
The National Anthem was sang by Alexandria Paff, and the guest speaker was Cindy Ewoldt who shared her personal heartfelt cancer journey with attendees. “We thank Cindy for sharing her cancer journey and story at this year’s event. Many tears were shed.”
All monies raised will be allocated to cancer patients living within Taylor County who have gone through cancer treatments between May 2022 and June 2023. The money is awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis and awarded regardless of income, insurance status, or where treatment is received. Applications are available starting June 1 from the Taylor County Health Department or TCMoving4Cure.com. Applications will be accepted until all funds are depleted.
This year’s top five fundraising teams (and team leaders) were Sierra Pacific (Terese Ziembo) raising $6,200; Walking Warriors (Nellie Carlson) raising $3,897; PineNeedle Properties (Carmen Thiede) at $2,650; K99 Radio (Karen Dahlvig) raising $850; and MAES Movers (Stacy Leonard) at $830. Thank you to these teams and team leaders for their outstanding efforts who organize events and fundraisers to collect funds for our event. “We appreciate all the teams and individuals that participated in our event and their fundraising efforts,” Thiede said.
The Committee thanks this year’s business sponsors, in particular our Platinum Sponsors of AbbyLand Foods, Aspirus Health, Forward Bank, Investment and Insurance, K99/WIGM Radio, Larry & Jackie Meyer, PineNeedle Properties, Sierra Pacific, TDS, and Prevail Bank.
“Many community businesses and members donated to our raffle ticket prizes and giveaways. Without these people our event could not continue to be successful. We appreciate all the support, sponsors, volunteers, and participants who joined together in making our 2023 a success,” Thiede said. Raffle winners were announced the evening of the event and will be contacted this week.
Individuals wanting to donate during the year may do so by contacting a committee member on the TCMoving4cure.com website. Any money collected throughout the year are maintained until next year’s event and included in that year’s allocations. Next year’s event will be Friday evening, May 17, 2024.
