Reds win in extras, Rib Lake wins, Medford falls in extras on league’s holiday weekend
DAIRYLAND LEAGUE BASEBALL
Thomas Mildbrand’s two-out single drove in Zach Haynes with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and Nick Retterath slammed the door on Marshfi eld in the bottom half as the Reds secured a 3-2 win over the Chaparrals in Dairyland League play Saturday afternoon.
The Reds went to 4-0 in league play and continue to hold early control of Division B. It was their second victory over Marshfield, who slid to 0-3.
The Reds broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning by pushing two runs across on two hits, a hit batter and two errors.
Spike Alexander pitched five shutout innings before tiring in the sixth. The Chaps took advantage, tying the game on a pair of walks, a wild pitch, a passed ball and a sacrifice.
Tyler Thicke came on and got out of the jam with no further damage and wound up throwing three scoreless innings. Retterath got the win with two scoreless frames after that.
Haynes singled with one out in the 10th and stole second before scoring on Mildbrand’s hit.
Whittlesey had eight hits and took advantage of four walks and five hit batters in the win. Derek Nichols led the offense, going two for four.
The Reds are at Pittsville Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. first pitch.
_ The Wisconsin Rapids Redhawks made their league debut a good one Sunday, shutting out host Westboro 11-0. The Redhawks outhit Westboro 10-2 and played errorless defense while dropping the Trojans to 0-3 in Division B.
Rapids scored two runs in the second, two more in the fourth and then broke it open with a five-run fifth that started with an error. Singles by Ryan Sering and Hunter Boudreau drove in a run. After Michael Johnson walked to load the bases, Jesse Fritz singled in Boudreau, John Barten hit a sacrifice fly and Jacob Wipfli hit a two-run double to make it 9-0.
Garrett Huber added a two-run double in the ninth.
Dayne Marlenga had both of Westboro’s hits, singles in the third and sixth innings. Ethan Peters was the winning pitcher, while Butch Wiegel was the starter for Westboro. The Trojans committed six errors and struck out 12 times.
Westboro is at 2-0 Merrill this Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
_ The Rib Lake Osprey improved to 2-0 in Division A, getting two runs in the top of the seventh to knock off the host Minocqua Wood Ducks 4-3 on Sunday. Minocqua was coming off a 6-3, 10-inning win over the host Medford Moondogs on Saturday night.
The Interwald Woodticks fell 6-0 to visiting Everest on Sunday. Interwald, Medford and Minocqua are all 1-1 in Division A. Wausau won its first league game of 2022 by a 29-1 score at Spirit on Sunday. The Twins are 0-4.
Interwald is at Wausau at 1:30 p.m. and Rib Lake visits Everest at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Medford hosts Everest at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
