Gilman school board sees change in leadership following election

With the elections now over, Gilman School board has made minor personnel changes, as well as change of officers.
Nominations for the officers were selected and voted on by fellow board members.
When it came to nominations for president, Valorie Kulesa nominated Bruce Ewings Sr.
Darrel Thompson nominated Cheryl Ustianowski. Thompson said “I am nominating Cheryl in light of the fact that I think she has done a phenomenal job as our President this past year. She has shown the abilities and the willingness to perform her duties along with the weight and responsibilities that goes into being the President.”
Bruce Ewings Sr. won the vote of President with four votes from his fellow board members.
Vice President nominations included Ustianowski nominating Thompson. Kulesa nominated Chris Skabroud. Skabroud won the position as Vice President with four votes from his fellow board members.
Clerk position was given to Kulesa by a unanimous vote.
Treasurer nominations included Thompson nominated by Skabroud. Thompson declined the nomination. Thompson nominated Jessica Wisocky. Wisocky accepted her position after a vote of four votes from her fellow board members.
Board reorganization was updated as well. It started with Kulesa continuing to be the CESA (Cooperative Educational Service Agency) representative being that she is on the CESA board already.
Library Board will continue to be run by Jamie Wilson, who is the Librarian/ Instructional Coach.
IT Tech Representative is Tammy Weir.
Transportation Committee is Ustianowski, Thompson, and Ewings.
Policy Committee is Thompson, Kulesa, and Skabroud.
Forest Committee is Thompson, Skabroud, Ustianowski took Ewings’ spot.
Facilities committee is Kulesa and Ewings.
Finance Committee is Wisocky and two other board members on a voluntary basis.
Official Approvals for the School District of Gilman include:
• Time, date, and location of meetings: 6:30 p.m. Finance Committee, 7 p.m. Board meeting,
• Official Depository: Superior Choice Credit Union, Forward Financial, LGIP (which is a state governmental pool bank at state level), Community Foundation of Chippewa County
• Official Newspaper: Star News Superintendent Walter Leipart gave his Superintendent report saying that the parent/teacher conference meetings were very well attended on March 23. A mental health and first aid training was conducted among staff members as well prior to spring break.
“That was very eye opening for the staff,” Leipart said.
Leipart compiled a disciplinary report with info on Bullying/Harrasment, Technology Infraction, Hallway/Cafeteria, Tardy Infractions, Classroom disruptions and other.
The results are as follows:
• 1st Quarter: 39 Detentions; 1 inschool suspension.
• 2nd Quarter: 26 Detentions; 1 out of school suspension.
• 3rd Quarter: 29 Detentions; 1 inschool and 1 out of school suspension.
• 4th Quarter: 1 Detention (12 days into the 4th quarter).
“The discipline is on a downward trajectory,” Leipart said. In other business: The board approved the senior class to go to The Mall of America in Minnesota on Wednesday, May 11, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. as their senior class trip.
Summer school and recreation sessions for the Gilman School District are June 13-July 1 and July 11-July 27. Jennifer Eckert and Jess Schneider co-directing again this year.
Swimming lessons will occur in Stanley- Boyd again this year. An extra bus had to be added due to the large amount of students interested in taking lessons this summer.
Another intervention teacher will be hired through ESSER III (federal relief funding) funds.
Zack Marion and Emma Grunseth were each awarded the Cloverbelt Scholar Athlete Awards on April 6.
Gabbie Krug and Hannah Vick were each awarded the Cloverbelt Academic Scholar Award, who were honored at a banquet on April 13 in Spencer.
Colton Lang, Casey Grunseth, and Tatum Weir have qualified for the National Archery Tournament.
Tammy Weir said “Between Casey and Tatum they got first in the state, which is a great accomplishment.”
May 14 is the national tournament which is being held in Kentucky.
If the students place within the top 100, they would be able to qualify for the World’s Archery Tournament.
National Honor Society inductions were held on Sunday April 24, with three students being inducted.
Middle school graduation will be on May 31, which the same day as the elementary students’ annual track and field day.
Senior award night is on May 18. Graduation will be held on May 27. June 1 & 2, 25-30 students from the district will be attending the Students of Today Leaders of Tomorrow festivities, at Camp Forest Springs in Westboro. That is during school, but it is an official school event.
