Medford graduate, Jasmine Enriquez, has recently gotten hired as a staff assistant at Tammy Baldwin’s offi ce in Madison. She has been there for two weeks now and is still training, but is excited for her future there.

“I am excited to work for her,” said Enriquez.

Enriquez has recently graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she double majored in political science and legal studies. She also received a certifi cate in public policy, which she explained as being Madison’s equivalent of a minor. While Enriquez is an aspiring lawyer, she has always had a strong interest in politics.

Enriquez’s initial interest in political studies started after taking U.S. Government and Politics in high school. However, when deciding what to go to college for, she wasn’t sure what career she wanted to pursue and entered Madison undecided. In her first semester of college, she made some changes to her schedule and ended up taking a political science class called politics around the world and loved the class. From then on, she took more political science classes and declared political science as one of her majors.

Before landing her current position with Tammy Baldwin, Enriquez gained a number of experiences through internships. The summer after her sophomore year, she worked as an intern at the Wisconsin State Capitol for Representative LaKeshia Myers.

“That was my very first real introduction to politics,” said Enriquez. “I had canvassed for political campaigns and volunteered here and there, so I kind of got my feet wet.”

Enriquez explained that while working for Myers, she got to observe how her supervisor ran the entire offi ce since there was limited staff members at the time.

Enriquez got the opportunity to attend press releases and conferences through that internship that helped push her more into the field of politics, which in turn led to her spending a semester in Washington D.C. During the spring semester of 2020, Enriquez traveled to D.C. and worked as a communications intern at the Alliance of Community Health Plans, an organization that advocates for nonprofit health care.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Enriquez had to cut her semester in D.C. short and had to return to Wisconsin. Despite that, the experience helped lead her to applying to work for Tammy Baldwin which she’s hoping will be a great start to her career.
