10 Years Ago – 2010
Cadott sixth-grade teachers Stacey Boehm and Courtney Braun, receive TV Channel 18’s Golden Apple Award, presented by news anchor Jerry Gallagher. The educators were recognized for their excellence in teaching and dedication to students.
20 Years Ago – 2000
The popular The Ranch Supper Club, south of Cornell on 178, owned by Larry Janssen and Nancy Spaeth, is a complete loss, after fire guts the building. Traffic was detoured, as firefighters pumped water across the road from the Chippewa River to battle the blaze.
30 Years Ago – 1990
Members of the Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL), Cadott Branch, are awarded a Gold Star rating by the Fraternal Benefit Society. Cadott’s AAL, led by president Amy Shilts, received the recognition for their exceptional volunteer service to the community.
40 Years Ago – 1980
Barron County Federal Savings and Loan Association opens a branch office on Cornell’s Main Street. Jim Doers will act as the branch manager, with help from tellers Toni Rufledt and Alice Conley.
50 Years Ago – 1970
The old Main Street Cadott fire hall, built in 1897, is slated to come down, after owner Ron Bourget sold the building to Robert Wenzel. Wenzel, who owns Wenzel’s Bar, plans to demolish the vacant fire hall and use the space as a parking lot for his establishment.
60 Years Ago – 1960
Cornell is besieged with Kennedys, as presidential hopeful Sen. John Kennedy campaigns in the city, followed by his sister, Eunice Schriver, and brother, Bob, all within the space of a week.
100 Years Ago – 1920
Experiencing one of the worst floods in the history of the Chippewa Valley, Cornell sees high water and unusually heavy ice floes, making bridge crossings unsafe. Damages left from the flood number in the thousands.
