10 Years Ago – 2010

The annual Chili Fest at Turk’s BBC in Cornell, nets $175, plus a box of non-perishable items for the Cornell Food Pantry. The winners of the contest – Brenda Gotheride and Erin Bonander – also donated their $50 and $20 gift certificates to the pantry.

20 Years Ago – 2000

Les Timmerman, Harold Moldrem and Vince Miller are recognized for their 50 years of service each, to the Cadott American Legion. All three served overseas in World War II.

30 Years Ago – 1990

Mother Nature proves unpredictable, as area temperatures plummet, along with rain and snow making roads all but impassable, and walking hazardous. Two days later, the temperatures soar to 70 degrees and yards become mud-filled ponds.

40 Years Ago – 1980

Cadott High School’s special education class makes a quilt to raffle off, with help from teacher’s aid Shirley Starck. Funds raised from the three for 50 cents tickets, will be used for the class to go camping and to the Special Olympics.

50 Years Ago – 1970

Several hundred eggs are ready to be hidden at the Cornell City Park, for the Cornell Business Association’s (CBA) annual Easter Egg Hunt for youth 10 and under. According to CBA president Bob Palmer, prizes this year include large plush stuffed animals, and chocolate bunnies and chickens.

60 Years Ago – 1960

A new 4-H club is formed in the Danielson School area, north of Cadott, with several parents of members sharing leadership duties. The new club chooses the name of the Yellow River Hillbillies.

100 Years Ago – 1920

A. J. Edminster, Holcombe Colonization Company, reports that his business is ready to pick up where it left off last fall. Last year, the company sold 13,560 acres of Chippewa County land to 200 new settlers, thereby increasing Holcombe’s residents to roughly 1,000 new people, who in turn, built homes.
