HOPE Walk planned for Tuesday Aug. 9 at Medford City Park

Families and individuals impacted by alcohol and other drugs will be given the opportunity to find support through the “Hope Walk, A Night of Remembrance and celebration of Recovery for those impacted by AODA” scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9 in the Medford City Park.

The event will include guest speakers, Recovery Rocks, a memory table, a free meal, and special music by Sojourner as well as access to AODA resource agencies. There will also be free family swimming at the city pool that evening for participants and their families.

In addition, area residents are invited to participate in the Wisconsin Faces of Addiction and Recovery Quilt program. Quilts will be displayed at the event.

The Wisconsin Faces of Addiction and Recovery Quilt through the Megan Kelly Foundation, visually shows the impact Substance Use Disorder (SUD) has made on Wisconsin communities and families. Everyone is welcome to include a quilt square for your friend, loved one, or yourself. Quilt square colors signify: White = Recovery and Hope; Gray = Incarcerated for SUD; Red = active SUD; Black = Tragically lost his or her life to own SUD or someone else’s. Current quilts may be viewed at the Wisconsin Faces of Addiction Quilt Facebook page.

The deadline to submit is July 15 for you or your loved one to be included. The Megan Kelley Foundation is a nonprofit, please consider making a donation to help cover the cost of the Quilts or to make a quilt square.

Squares can be designed for someone in recovery with a name, date of recovery/ sobriety/discovery and city or someone who is incarcerated with a name and city or someone who is struggling in active substance use with a name/initials and city. The cities help the organizers geographically place the squares together to show the patterns in communities.

Options to add a square include: Option 1: The material must measure 5” x 5” to make the square. Create your design using your friend’s/relative’s or your own name, initials, a picture is more impactful or a saying with fabric markers, fabric paints or transfer paper. No glitter, stickers or puffy paints. To allow for seam allowances, your picture needs to be within a 3.5 inches to 4 inches maximum radius from the center of the square.

Option 2: If you don’t know how to add an image, you can send your image to wifacesofaddiction@gmail.com. A $5 donation covers the cost of the materials and can be sent to: Bev Kelley-Miller, 225 Rivers Edge Dr, Kimberly, WI 54136, 920-428-2564. Squares must be submitted by July 15 to be included in the display for the HOPE Walk event.
