A collision between an SUV and horse-drawn buggy resulted in two people being transported for medical treatment. The incident occurred at 8:20 a.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 10 just east of Granton in the town of Lynn, near County Highway W.
An SUV was traveling eastbound on Highway 10 when it struck the left rear corner of a buggy that was also traveling east and was about 1 foot in the lane of traffic off the white line. The buggy went into the south side ditch and came to rest facing east. One of the occupants of the buggy, Peter Miller, 22, of Loyal, was thrown into the ditch and landed east of where the buggy came to stop. He was transported to Marshfield Medical Center with suspected serious injuries.
The SUV continued east before entering the south side ditch facing south. Once in the ditch, the SUV started to roll, and came to rest on the driver’s side facing south in the driveway of W1651 U.S. Highway 10.
The driver of the SUV, Justin Thur, 35, Neillsville, was trapped and had to be extricated. He was transported to Marshfield Medical Center with suspected serious injuries.
The other occupants of the buggy, Daniel Gingerich of Loyal and John Miller of Granton, were not ejected and had suspected minor injuries. They were not transported.
The accident report from the Clark County Sheriff’s Office indicated that Thur was distracted by operating his mobile phone while driving. The report listed driver actions of “exceed speed limit, failure to yield right-of-way, failure to control,” and “operated motor vehicle in inattentive, careless, or erratic manner.”
The highway was temporarily closed as emergency crews responded to the scene. As of 9:56 a.m., the scene had been cleared and the roadway was open.
