By Valorie Brecht The Greenwood Fire Department responded to a house fire at 205 N. Andrews Ave. in Greenwood, after being paged at 12:51 p.m. on Saturday.

The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical issue.

“It appears it started around the outdoor light on the upstairs balcony,” said Greenwood Fire Chief Delmond Horn. “The upper apartment had been occupied and they called it in. There was nobody home downstairs.”

The fire began on the balcony on the south side of the structure and made its way inside. The door to the balcony was completely burned through. Windows on the street-facing side were shattered due to the intense heat.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and the scene was cleared at approximately 2:40 p.m.

There were no injuries. “The residents did the right thing. As soon as they saw what was happening, they got out of there and made the phone call,” said Horn.

The upper apartment experienced “significant damage,” said Horn. The lower apartment had water damage as well.

The residents of both apartments were displaced. They all were able to find another place to stay and they took belongings out of the apartments that they were able to salvage.

The Greenwood Fire Department was assisted by the Loyal Fire Department in this incident. Greenwood EMS was also on site in case they were needed for medical assistance.
