Athens OK’s new housing agreement

The Athens Village Board on Monday approved a developer’s agreement with Decker Investments, which will pay $7 per yard for road base in the first addition to the village’s West View Subdivision.
The board also approved civil engineering plans for the proposed first addition contingent on approval of the final plat. Village president Randy Decker abstained from voting because he owns Decker Investments.
West View Subdivision is located off West Village Limits Road near Athens Veterinary Service and Athens Middle/High School. There are currently 22 houses and one open plot in West View Subdivision. Room is available for 14 houses to be built in the first addition onto the subdivision.
The board approved a preliminary plat for the sudivision addition in April. At that time, Taran Brodziski, streets committee chairman, raised concerns about water coming down Nathan Street and running across the new street in the first addition.
Decker told Brodziski that a culvert will be installed across the new street to catch the water runoff and he might add another retention pond to the east inside the subdivision.

Other business
■ The board approved the hiring of Janke General Contractors in Athens for snow removal services during the 2024-25 season. The village will pay Janke $95 per hour for the endloader and $120 per hour for the dump truck.
■ Board members authorized the village to sign a 15-year lease with Athens School District to access its water well at $ 1 per year.
■ The board agreed to pay $1,327 for high-back bar stools for The Hall bowling alley in the basement of Athens Community Hall.
■ Board members decided not to hire a full-time police officer, as requested by police chief Aaron Stencil, and instead hired an additional part-time police officer, Brent Olson, pending a background check.
Stencil has also been talking to the Athens School District about possibly adding a school resource officer in the future.
■ The board approved the appointment of Brock Guralski as village forester to replace Eugene Denk.
■ The board will hold its 2025 budget hearing at 6:45 p.m. before its 7 p.m. regular board meeting on Monday, Nov. 25.
