Five running to replace Kulp in 69th Assembly District

Four Republicans and one Democrat completed the candidate filing process by the June 1 deadline to have their names on fall ballots for the soon-to-be-vacant 69th District Assembly seat. Incumbent Bob Kulp of Stratford is not seeking a new term after six years in the seat, and a quartet of candidates from the Republican side and a single one on the Democratic ticket have hopes of succeeding him.

Meanwhile, Clark County voters will have few choices to make for elected offi cers this fall as most county races will have only one candidate.

Republicans filing for candidacy for the 69th District seat are Tim Miller of Stratford, Donna Rozar of Marshfield, Michael V. Smith of Loyal, and Matthew Windheuser of Marshfield. Smith’s candidacy was listed as “pending” on the Wisconsin Elections Commission candidate listings as of Tuesday, while the other three were approved. They will first vie for the Republican nomination in an Aug. 11 primary. The lone Democratic candidate -- Brian Giles of Marshfield -will not have a primary opponent and will face the winner of the Aug. 11 Republican primary in the general election on Nov. 3.

Kulp has represented the 69th District for three 2-year terms. The district covers most of Clark County and parts of Marathon and Wood counties, including the village of Spencer.

In the 68th Assembly District, which includes 13 western Clark County townships (including Eaton, Warner, Mead and Hendren) and the city of Greenwood, incumbent Republican Jesse James of Altoona has filed to run for a second 2-year term. Filing to run against him was Democratic challenger Emily Berge of Eau Claire. Her candidate status was also listed as “pending” as of Tuesday.

In Clark County, the only contested race this fall will be for treasurer. Incumbent Mary Domanico of Neillsville has filed to run for a new term, and will be opposed by Renee Schoen of Neillsville. They are both candidates on the Republican ticket, so there will be a primary on Aug. 11. Running unopposed for a new term is county clerk Christina Jensen of Neillsville. Mary Denk of Greenwood is the lone candidate for the county register of deeds job. Incumbent Peggy Walter is not seeking re-election.

For Clark County district attorney, incumbent Melissa Inlow is the only candidate. She was appointed to the seat late in 2019 after Kerra Stumbris resigned.
