Last week aldermen voted to recommend paying out $3,600 of the $10,000 pledged based on subtracting the amount of in-kind work done by the city staff and materials purchased for the pedestrian bridge project. Bridge committee members were upset by the amount recommended because they said many of the costs listed by the city were for the Veterans Park improvements rather than the walking bridge.

December 19, 1997

The sixth annual Christmas Tour of Homes on December 6 was a sellout! Over 300 people enjoyed the homes and decorations on the tour sponsored by the Medford Friends of the Library. Proceeds from the tour will be used for a special project in the new Medford Library. General chairperson for this event was FOL president Mary Schoofs. Other committee members were Barb Schief, Dorothy Frankki, Dee Gowey, Shirley Klinner and Pat Balko.

50 YEARS AGO

December 21, 1972

Louis Kasparek, town of Browning, was reelected chairman of the Taylor county agricultural stabilization and conservation service (ASCS) committee at the annual convention Friday at the Medford VFW clubhouse. Victor Vlach, town of Molitor was reelected vice chairman and Larry Budny, town of Aurora, newly named to the committee, was named regular member.

75 YEARS AGO

December 18, 1947

The plate glass windows for the new front at the Beintker & Hug Implement company were installed on Tuesday and the false front which had been on the building for several weeks was removed. Installation of the glass completed the front. With the installation of the windows it will now be possible to heat the east section of the building and a concrete floor will be poured within a few days. This section will house the office and repair parts department, and new bins will be installed for storage of parts. Contractors for the brick work on the front and also the concrete work are Widmer & Ruesch.

100 YEARS AGO

December 21, 1922

Stevens Point won from Medford High School at Point Friday 30 to 16. Medford had the game tied 12 to 12 at the half but had less chance in the second half. They feel that Medford has as good a team as Stevens Point and that they lost because the Medford boys lacked their usual “pep.” Medford plays Stevens Point at Medford later in the season.

125 YEARS AGO

December 25, 1897

George Assbaum, an old resident of Deer Creek was kicked in the ribs by his horse last Friday. He was hauling wood to town when his horse refused to go. He applied the whip and the horse resented in the above manner. Dr. Miller was called and pronounces the case serious, as pneumonia has developed and the patient is 71 years old.
