After hearing arguments saying the plan was too aggressive, and arguments saying it wasn’t aggressive enough, Wisconsin’s Natural Resources Board Tuesday decided proposed quotas and harvest zones were just right and approved an emergency rule setting the framework for the 2012-2013 wolf hunting and trapping season. The vote by the seven-member board after nearly six hours of discussion was unanimous and included three amendments to the Department of Natural Resources proposal, which was presented by wildlife ecology section chief Bill Vander Zouwen and land administrator Kurt Thiede.

Some area residents wanted to see the issue killed on the spot, but the Forestry & Lands Committee last week voted 2-1 to let the full Taylor County Board decide whether or not to lease land near Rib Lake to Rhinelander’s channel 12 for a 1,700 foot communications tower. Committee Chairman Mike Roiger and member Tim Peterson voted to submit a resolution to the full board while member Wayne Lato voted against it.

July 20, 1972

A group dynamics traffic safety school for motorists arrested and convicted of driving while under the influence of intoxicants, is being formed in Medford for Taylor, Price, and Lincoln counties. These persons would be referred to the school by presiding judges. The class at Medford is scheduled to begin Wednesday, July 26, at Medford senior high school from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Previously motorists have been referred to the alcohol safety program at Wausau.

July 17, 1947

Negotiations which had been underway for approximately three months were concluded last week with the announcement that Rib Lake was assured of a new industry—a shoe factory. The announcement followed a conference in Rib Lake between Wm. Reed, Chicago, and members of the advancement committee of the Rib Lake Commercial Club.

100 YEARS AGO

July 20, 1922

Gilman will be host Sunday to the crowd which will gather for the Holstein picnic. The speaker will be John M. Kelley, considered the best there is in the country on dairy advertising. This will be the annual get-together of the Holstein men of the county. Incidental to the picnic is the clash of the Gilman and Hannibal baseball teams of the Taylor-Rusk Counties League. These teams had a fast game last Sunday, which Gilman won 1 to 0. They are the league leaders.

125 YEARS AGO

July 24, 1897

The Ladies Aid invites everybody to go to the Ice Cream social at the home of Mrs. S. F. Harris next Wednesday evening. Full supper and ice cream served. Mrs. and Mr. Harris would be glad to receive a house full. Arrangements are making for one of the best gatherings of the season.
