The latest Gilman community meeting focused on the scale and starting points for projects aimed at helping businesses develop in the community. A group of 23 gathered at the Gilman Senior Center Monday night. Tom Hand, owner and CEO of the Gilman Cheese Corporation, started the meeting with a discussion of positive and negative assets Gilman has in the economic development area. Hand picked a pair of area communities, Thorp and Abbotsford, as comparables for his discussion. “These are some of the things a community can offer and all things are relative,” Hand said.

Medford landlords have to keep a close eye on their tenants. If the tenants don’t pay their utility bills, either because they can’t or because they won’t, the landlords could be stuck with the bill. Committee on Public Utilities met last week to discuss what could be done to help out landlords in the wake of Wisconsin Act 419, which requires all electric utility bills to be placed on the property owner’s municipal tax bill.

February 10, 1972

Members of Community United Church of Christ in Medford and Peace United Church of Christ of Dorchester will honor their pastor on the occasion Sunday of his 25th anniversary of ordination. He is Rev. Milton G. Petzold who joined the area congregations in 1970. The special joint service at Community church starting at 10:45 a.m., will be conducted by Dr. Eugene Jaberg, professor of speech and communications at the United Theological seminary, New Brighton, Minn., sermonizer, and Rev. Ramon Hernandez, Merrill liturgist. Dinner will be served at the church to the two congregations and invited guests.

75 YEARS AGO

February 6, 1947

Cars driven by Mrs. Erma Prell and Allen Pierce, both of Medford, crashed head-on last Thursday morning on County Trunk E four miles west of Medford during a blinding snow storm. Damage to their cars was estimated at $150 each. Mrs. Prell was taken to the Medford Hospital for minor injuries. Passengers in the Pierce car, Fred Krausse, Mrs. Pierce, and Shirley Pierce, were uninjured.

100 YEARS AGO

February 9, 1922

A meeting of property holders and other citizens was called in the farm room at the courthouse last night. The call was issued in a letter, signed by “Wm. Hull et al” which stated among other things: “there is considerable talk that at some time the alley between Weber’s and the post office is going to be closed” and “we would be compelled to walk over a block further to reach down town.”

125 YEARS AGO

February 13, 1897

Willie Pagel sixteen years of age, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pagel, of the town of Medford, had his left leg broken by the kick of a horse last Monday afternoon at Perkinstown. Dr. Nystrum was called and reduced the fracture. The Pagel family seem to be in the midst of a heavy slice of lean, and are meeting with more than their just share of misfortune.
