At Tuesday’s city council meeting, aldermen approved spending up to $56,000 from this year’s remaining city construction funds to install colored concrete in the terrace way between the curb and the sidewalk. The red-dyed concrete will match the colors used in the roundabouts and other portions of the project. According to Don Andre, of Fleming, Andre and Associates, a consultant with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation working on the project, the colored concrete will help set off the driveway entrances and help define the curb lines for motorists and pedestrians along the road.

October 23, 1996

At last week’s Common Council meeting, Mayor Fred Schroeder discussed with the Council his plans concerning the library issue. He gave a long talk to the aldermen, describing his view of the situation and what should be done. That view, in short, is to put a moratorium on the whole library issue until January of 1999. “Some of the things that have occured regarding the library have got me very, very concerned,” Schroeder said.

October 21, 1971

Federal and state offices and area banking firms will close for Veteran’s Day, Monday, marking the first time that holiday has been observed on the fourth Monday of October instead of the previous date of November 11. Limited post office service will be given. The Medford post office will have no city or rural delivery, however the lobby will be open from 8 a.m. to the dispatching time of 6 p.m. for mailing letters and small parcels with affixed postage. Patrons with rented boxes and drawers may pick up mail from 10 a.m.

75 YEARS AGO

October 3, 1946

Fred Brede Sr. has resigned his position as commissioner of streets and superintendent of water works in the city of Medford. His resignation became effective Tuesday, October 1, according to Mayor Al Cherney. Gordon Kuse, city treasurer, is now acting commissioner of the city streets, sewers, and water works. The work in his office is being handled by August Roeber, deputy city treasurer.

100 YEARS AGO

October 13, 1921

One of the jurors drawn for this term of court was a lady down on the records as W. Baker. She asked to be excused from service and Judge Risjord allowed her to go, after a good natured chaffing about the failure of the first woman drawn to serve as juror. The judge stated that the courts expected to make a great deal of use of women as jurors in the cases of the future.

125 YEARS AGO

October 10, 1896

To the voters of Taylor Co.

I hereby announce myself an independent candidate for the office of sheriff of Taylor County, not withstanding the report that I had withdrawn from the contest. Should I be elected, I promise to perform the duties of said office faithfully and economically.
