School board members approved a one year contract extension for Krug Bus Service with $90,000 in credits at a special Tuesday morning school board meeting.

The meeting was the follow-up to last Thursday’s contentious school board meeting where the board had considered going with a bid from Lamers Bus Lines of Green Bay in order to shave about $90,000 from the $1.2 million transportation budget.

Rather than go with the out-of-town bidder on the 5-year contract, board members decided to keep the contract with the company which has provided bus service to the district for more than four decades and give Krugs the opportunity to match Lamers’ bid.

On Monday morning, the transportation committee met in closed session to negotiate with representatives from Krug Bus Service.

Originally, A-1 Excavating, Inc. of Bloomer was supposed to handle the Main Street reconstruction project. It was discovered, however, that A-1 had erred on its bid document. As part of the bidding process, the company (according to state statute) was liable for a percentage of the cost of the project if a mistake was found in the form of a bid bond. A-1 did not include a provision for structural backfill, which would have added about $89,364 to the company’s bid. The bid bond amounts to 5 percent of the total project cost, or $37,161.

Terry Pecha of A-1 was at the Committee of the Whole meeting last week. He said, “I made a mistake. I missed the requirement.” He offered to settle with the City of Medford for an amount less than the bid bond so that the matter wouldn’t have to go to court.

The Gilman Lions club, seeing a need for a recreational center for youthful and aging handicapped persons, has been planning a project which would be completed on the shores of Chequamegon Waters flowage.

The committee had obtained a threeyear lease of six acres of shoreland north of Miller dam and located on the former Loren Truax property. Plans call for the construction of a chalet, a fishing pier, beach and other recreational facilities. The entire complex would be designed so that all facilities can be used by the handicapped with a minimum of assistance.

The pea canning season at the Medford plant of the Oconomowoc Canning Company will end sometime next week, Manager Emil Weix states. This year’s pack will equal the 1945 pack in number of cases, over 170,000, but the general quality will probably be a little lower in grade due to the hot weather ripening the peas rapidly.

The pack, which began July 5 and will end before August 1, is the shortest on record at the local factory.

John May, Medford boy, robbed the Marshfield American National Bank Tuesday just after noon, getting away with $1700 in cash. He was captured about 7:30 in the evening by a farmer living north of Ogema. May was in the farmer’s yard for the purpose of filling the radiator of the Buick car he was driving. The Buick had been taken from the garage of Louis Kindling, wealthy cigar manufacturer at Milwaukee, for whom John has been acting as chauffeur.

May’s escapade produced a sensation in the community. A large number of Marshfield citizens and people along the way joined in the pursuit, and considerable dust was stirred up by the flying Buick and the pursuing cars.

Mellen Sifting.

The town-board has layed out a road to lead to Tylers Falls, four miles north, of Mellen. Tylers Falls is one of the most picturesque places in the state. The falls are about 75 ft high and are lined with huge rocks of granite on either side. The Bad River and Tylers Forks meet at this point. Fishing for Rainbow trout is excellent at this point. Work in the new road will commence at once. It will be a great convenience to those that wish to visit the falls. The woods and surroundings are just splendid for camping out. Numerous ice cold springs are within a stones throw of the falls.
