A plan to develop a “Green Institute” at the Northcentral Technical College in Medford fell victim to federal rule changes for Economic Development Authority funding.
Lori Weyers, president of NTC, was in Medford Tuesday morning meeting with the Taylor County Board to deliver the bad news and reaffirm NTC’s commitment to the Medford region.
“I am here today to tell you we cannot move forward on EDA funding,” she said explaining the college did not have the funds to proceed with the match requirements without going to referendum.
“The college received word that due to new regulations from the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) and a decrease in available funds, appropriate funding for the Medford project was not available,” Weyers said.

The City of Medford is applying for a DNR Parkland Improvement Grant to be used to extend the Riverwalk down the east side of the river, City Administrator Richard Johnston said at Medford’s Common Council meeting last week.
A bridge, which the City is in the process of purchasing, will be placed behind Medford Millwork, Inc. to allow passage over a small creek there, he said, near the place where North Main Street curves to the east. Also, the Civilian Conservation Core will be doing some brushing work along the Pine Line snowmobile trail that runs through the woods, clearing the way for the project.
The trail and the bridge will be used by snowmobilers during the winter months.

The dance given at Tyler’s Hall on the evening of April 10th by the Metropolitan club was a great success in every way. About sixty-five couples attended the ball, and every one of them reported having a good time. A splendid repast was served about midnight. The dance did not break up until the early hours of the next morning. There were present at the dance parties from Ashland, Sanborn, Hurley, Iron Belt and Mineral Lake. Excellent music was furnished by Bean McKinsey of Hurley, Wm Lehman and Arthur Petersen from Mellen.
