Virginia’s parents were Jennie (Johnson) Herrick and Thomas DeWitt Herrick.

Her mother’s parents were Norwegian immigrants, and her Dad’s parents were of Irish and Welsh descent.

Virginia lived in Jump River, until she entered high school in Chippewa Falls, graduating on her birthday in 1947. While in high school, Virginia lived and worked as a nanny for the Coleman family.

She met Wilfred “Baldy” Hakes shortly after he returned from serving in the military and they were married July 12, 1947. They moved to Cornell shortly after their marriage, and lived there until 2021.

Virginia wrote in 1981, that “Baldy and I had four of the best kids ever born, to the most ill-equipped parents.” She loved her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews; family was so important to her.

She is survived by her children – Dennis (Terry), Kay Doll (Jim) and David (Carol); seven grandchildren – Larry, Terry, Brian, Ashley, Evan, Curt Hakes and Matt Doll; four great-grandchildren – Landon, Ian, Mazyn Hakes and Hailey Doll; one sister – Lola; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband – Wilfred (Baldy); and a son – Terry; her parents; sisters – Helen, Sylvia and Maria; and brothers – Dale, Neil, Byrd and Harley.

Virginia’s wish is to be remembered as a believer of God, a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who loved her family dearly.
