Dr. Daniel “Dan” Mead Winger, 85, Cadott, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025, at his home.

Daniel was born Sept. 3, 1939, in Stanley, to Eldred and Virginia (Mead) Winger.

He was raised in Lublin, and graduated from Thorp High School in 1957.

Dan attended Kansas State University, where he fulfilled his childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian, by graduating in 1963, with a degree in doctor of veterinary medicine.

In his seventh-grade confirmation class, Dan knew he wanted to marry Jean Dawn Mattes. He did, June 27, 1959, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Thorp. The happy couple went on to spend 60 years of marriage together.

Dan worked as a field man for the family business, Winger Cheese, prior to establishing his veterinary practice, the Cadott Animal Clinic. He was the horse doctor in the area and dedicated to his clients, practice and the animals he cared for.

In retirement, Dan and Jean became snowbirds, splitting their time between Cadott, and Surprise, Ariz.

They were devout members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cadott, and Spirit of Grace Lutheran Church in Sun City Grand, Ariz. They traveled the world together and visited six continents.

Dan enjoyed golfing and horses immensely. He was proud to have ridden his favorite horse, Major, down the Grand Canyon, three times.

Fondly known as “Doc,” Dan will be remembered for being an animal lover, a loving husband, a hard-working father, a proud grandfather, an avid reader and a devoted man of faith. He had great intellect, sharp wit and a big personality, that could fill a room with laughter.

He is survived by his two children –Michele (Richard) Price, Stanley, and Paul (Jennifer) Winger, Cadott; three grandchildren – Victoria (Jeffrey) Flashinski, Thorp, Alexandra (Jamy) Szabla, Rosemount, Minn., and Dr. Nathan (Stacy) Price, Chippewa Falls; nine great-grandchildren – Bradley, Clayton and Lucas Flashinski, Audrina, Ava Leigh, Jackson and Jett Szabla, and Azaylea and Ty Price; niece – Laura (Thomas) Schleicher; brother – James Winger; two sisters – Sue (Larry) Willi and Virginia (Donn) Haas; sister-in-law – Diane Mattes; and many other friends and family.
