Thomas Aumann

March 1, 1955–Feb. 21, 2025 Thomas “Tom” Aumann of Colgate passed peacefully on Friday, Feb. 21, surrounded by family in Grafton, just eight days shy of his 70th birthday. He bravely battled cancer for 26 months, and fought with everything he had.

He was born on March 1, 1955, in Milwaukee to Louie and Rosie (nee Schleckman) Aumann. He attended St. Agnes grade school and graduated from Hamilton High School, making many lifelong friends along the way. He married his beloved bride Marlene (nee Klippel) on April 24, 1981. They were together for almost 46 years and welcomed four children into their family.

Tom worked in various trade industries until 1996, and then worked in carpentry until 2010 roofing, building, and remodeling local homes. When he wasn’t working, he spent time with his family traveling across the country. With the help of two Suburbans and two motorhomes over 13 years, he and his family visited 43 states plus Canada. Tom was the only one who could actually read and interpret TripTiks, so who knows where they would have ended up if he wasn’t the navigator. Being an avid outdoorsman, he was especially fond of fishing, traveling, bow hunting, making maple syrup, gardening, hosting campfires, and playing/coaching his girls’ softball teams.

One thing most people will remember Tom by was that he could never sit still. He loved to make things, was a go-getter, and always had to be doing a project, remodeling something, or checking out the height of his kids’ grass (to remind them to cut it before it rained). If Tom was out bumming around in his truck, there was a high chance you’d find him at the Restore, any hardware store, or Kwik Trip grabbing a coffee or dunkers. If you drove past his house, he was likely outside tinkering in the yard, moving trailers, riding his tractors, or “organizing” the garage. As a dad, if any of his kids needed help on a reno project, he was their first call — and if Tom couldn’t do the project, he’d bring one of his friends who could.

Tom always said “if you want a good neighbor, be one” and adapted that mindset to all of his relationships. He cherished time spent with dear friends and family, playing cards like cribbage and sheepshead, fixing things, and joking around, as his sense of humor was endless.

Tom was survived by his wife, Marlene, and their four children: Nicole (Jason), Steve, Michelle (Christian), and Katie (Josh). He will be dearly missed by his birthday buddy, Grayson. His absence will be felt by many great friends, grandchildren, and close family members who were so lucky to have known him, including his very special aunt, Lois, and special cousins, Lori and Randy.

A special thank you goes out to the staff at the Aurora Cancer Care of Germantown and Grafton, as well as the amazing nursing staff at the Aurora Grafton Medical Center third floor, who encouraged and supported him along his journey.

The family has chosen to plan a celebration of life on June 28, at the Germantown Senior Center from 1-4 p.m. because Tom loved hot weather.
