Elsie Dommer
Elsie Frances Dommer, age 86, of Abbotsford, went to her heavenly home February 20, 2025. A funeral service will be held Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Colby, with Pastor James Groleau presiding. Family, friends and neighbors are welcome for a visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at the Colby Cemetery. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford is entrusted with the arrangements.
Elsie was born on July 10,1938, the daughter of Anton and Artemis (Freimund) Weis in Spencer. During her younger years, she devoted herself to caring for her siblings and mother, especially when her mother fell ill. Elsie was a “master of repurpose”, always seeing a future possibility for any material item.
Elsie was united in marriage to Arvin Dommer at the Zion Lutheran Church in Colby. After a five month courtship the wedding occurred on May 20, 1961, so as to not interfere with spring planting or cutting of hay. Her “farmer’s wife” role was evident throughout their marriage. Eleven months after the wedding, the first of six children were born: Shirley, Lorraine, Duane, Carl, Sharon and Diane.
Elsie was known for her warm and welcoming nature, due to her bright smile and infectious laugh. Believing in small world association, she had the ability to make a friend anywhere, at any time. Her love for caring for others extended beyond her family in so many ways. Elsie found great joy in helping bring about a ministry to area children and adults with special needs which lasted several years with her strong involvement. During the years that her children participated in Cherokee Chums 4-H, she was an actively involved parent, as she was with any of her children’s passions. Elsie was a dedicated prayer warrior, whose unwavering faith and prayers brought comfort and strength to everyone she encountered. Elsie had a passion for gardening, with a special fondness and admiration for growing gladiolus of different sizes and colors. As the beloved matriarch of her family, Elsie’s absence will be profoundly felt and she will be greatly missed.
Elsie is survived by six children: Shirley Walczak, Lorraine (Francis) Wagner, Duane (Zane), Carl, Sharon (Randy) Jagodzinski and Diane (John) Martin; six grandchildren: Rachel (David) Huss, Kristin (Allen Lee) Wagner, Elizabeth Wagner, Andrew, Allison and Jacob Jagodzinski; three step-grandchildren: Andy (Balby), Kathleen, Tim Walczak; step greatgrandchildren: Jimmy, Yaritza Walczak. She is further survived by three siblings: Herman (Betty) Weis, Marge (Bob) Wiersig and John Weis; one sister-in-law, Lilli Weis, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Arvin, a brother, Tom Weis and a son-in-law, Jim Walczak. She was further preceded in death by in-laws: Leonard and Hilda Dommer, Delphin and Ruby Dommer and sister-in-law, Leona Dommer.
