Irene Laura Herkert was born on June 2, 1927, in Marshfield, the daughter of Edward F. and Adela M. (Schnitzler) Herkert. She was raised on the family farm. She received her education at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Marshfield, and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1945. In January of her senior year, Irene started working at People’s Gas Company in Marshfield, where she worked for six years. She was united in marriage on June 1, 1950, to James Leroy Susa at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Marshfield. They lived and farmed west of Greenwood until 1960, and then moved to a farm east of Greenwood, where they farmed until their son, Jim, took over the farm in 1992. They moved into Greenwood and she has resided there until entering Wells Nature View in June 2024.

She was a very active member of St. Mary Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Society. Irene had many interests, but especially loved crocheting, especially caps for babies that she donated to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, baking, her trips to Nebraska to visit relatives, and spending time with her family and friends.

She will be dearly missed by her five sons: Dennis of Pensacola, Fla., David (Bonnie) of Kronenwetter, Donald (Dawn) of Spencer, James of Loyal, and John (Sandy) of Eleva; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers: James Herkert, Lawrence (Dora) Herkert, and Ruben (Jo) Herkert, all of Marshfield; one sister-in-law, Ruth Herkert of Marshfield; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jim, on Nov. 19, 2002; three sisters: Lorraine Rakovec, Florence Smrecek, and Virginia Volovsek; and two brothers: William and Robert Herkert.
