Mary Alice Gumz
Mary Alice Gumz, age 86, formerly of Dorchester, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Monday, Oct. 21, 2024, at the Clark County Rehabilitation and Living Center.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24,2024, at First United Church of Christ in Colby. The Rev. Teri Hanson will preside. Burial will follow in the Dorchester Memorial Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome from 4 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford and from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the church.
Mary Alice was born on September 16,1938, the daughter of James and Louise (Daines) Erickson in Marshfield. She graduated from Dorchester High School. On June 1, 1957, Mary Alice was united in marriage to Herbert “Herbie” Gumz at Peace United Church of Christ in Dorchester. He preceded her in death on May 13, 2014.
Mary Alice was a farm wife and raised her eight children on the family farm. Special occasions, birthdays and holidays were always celebrated and a large cake was always included. Her family was most important and she cherished each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary Alice also let it be known how proud she was of all of them. Mary Alice is survived by her seven children: Dean of Dorchester, Sandra (David) Lueddecke of Abbotsford, Donna Purgett of Owen, David of Eau Claire, Rodney (Dawn) of Edgar, Daryl (Patricia) of Loyal and Kurt (Lori) of Dorchester; 21 grandchildren and 34 greatgrandchildren. She is further survived by two sisters-in-law: Joyce Erickson and Doris Apfelbeck; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Mark; and two brothers: Robert (Bev) Erickson and Eugene Erickson.
