Melvin J. Gebert
1926-2022
Melvin J. Gebert, 95, of Medford, died Monday, Apr. 18, 2022 at home surrounded by his family and while under the care of Hope Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Apr. 27 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford with Fr. Patrick McConnell officiating. Military honors provided by the Stetsonville Legion Post 519 will immediately follow the service at the church. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in the town of Little Black. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church.
Melvin was born June 7, 1926 in the town of Little Black, Taylor County to Fred and Josephine (Peissig) Gebert. He grew up in the Medford/Stetsonville area, where he also attended school.
Melvin served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1944 until his honorable discharge in 1946.
On May 25, 1950, he married Patricia “Pat” Habermeyer in Abbotsford. They resided in Stetsonville and later moved to Medford where Melvin started working for the Four Corner Cheese Factory, then for Dorchester Furniture, and then Parkin Dairy. He went back to school and earned his certification for Heavy Equipment and went to work for Eggert’s in Medford until his retirement.
He was a charter member of the Stetsonville Legion Post 519, where he was Post treasurer for many years and served on the honor guard as well. He enjoyed fishing and loved to take his kids to his favorite secret spots on the Turtle Flowage. His hobbies included vegetable gardening, going to the casino where he liked to play video poker, and hunting in Gilman on the Gebert land.
He is survived by his children, Bob Gebert (Lisa Dums), Denny (Mary) Gebert, Terry (Sue) Gebert, all of Medford, Marty (Kelly) Gebert of Stetsonville, Mary (Bryan) Bormann, Mike Gebert, Bill (Pam) Gebert, all of Medford; siblings, Gene (Leona) Gebert of Medford, Donald (Marge) Gebert of Franklin, Fred (Rose Ann) Gebert of Meridian, Idaho, Dale (Marcia) Gebert of Hazelhurst; sister-in-law, Caroline Gebert of Minocqua; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pat on Feb. 8, 2018; daughter, Donna Kay Gebert; daughter-in-law, Pat Gebert; siblings, Anita Hoffman McGuire, Ken “Bud” Gebert, Jim Gebert, and Nancy Schreiner; and a great-grandchild, Emmersyn Kozey.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be given to the family for future designation.
