A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, April 6, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riplinger. Rev. Lowell Bolstad will officiate, and burial will follow in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until time of service.
Betty Mae Neitzel was born on Feb. 22, 1931, in the town of Frankfurt, rural Edgar, the daughter of Walter E. and Erna I.A. (nee Ehmke) Neitzel. She was raised on the family farm. After completing her education, Betty worked at a basket factory in Edgar, before her marriage to Carl R. Soltow on Jan. 15, 1955. They farmed together in the Riplinger area for many years. In 1976, Betty started Betty’s Snack & Dine Restaurant in Colby, and later ran the Spencer Cafe for several years. After selling the restaurant, Betty worked at many area restaurants over the course of her life as she loved to cook. Angelus Retirement Community in Colby was her last position before retiring. She had many interests, but especially enjoyed cooking. The most important thing for her was to make sure that her family was full. She also loved gardening, canning and going to the casino. Betty was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riplinger.
She is survived by three children: Cathy (Richard) Johnston of New London, Dennis (Dana Liotta) Soltow of Arbor Vitae, and Patricia (Scott Grube) Soltow of Medford; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Lois Gehrke and Lavilla Schilling, both of Colby; nieces; nephews; and her dear friend, Leroy Dommer.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, Carl Soltow; her son, Randy Soltow; her son-in-law, Danny Buss; and her faithful companion, Pepper.
Betty will be missed by everyone -- her amazing cooking and baking, her contagious laugh, and her endless stories she would tell.
