Louis J. Perko, 99, Marshfield, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 14, 2022, at Wells Nature View in Marshfi eld. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 22, at the Hansen-Schilling Funeral Home, 1010 E. Veterans Pkwy., in Marshfield. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Louis was born on March 27, 1922, to Joseph Perko and Maria (nee Hoeevar) Perko in Willard. He graduated from the country school, which was located next to the Perko farmhouse. Louie’s job was to start the fire in the schoolhouse every morning in the winter time. He farmed on the homestead until 1965. From there, he worked for Schmidt’s Heating in Marshfield. In 1969, he worked for Marshfield Senior High School, where he was a night custodian until his retirement in 1983. During his retirement, he spent many years in Englewood, Fla., where he fished every day and enjoyed happy hours at the neighbor’s. He also enjoyed going to local bars and restaurants. On Sept. 6, 1968, Louie was united in marriage to the love of his life, Genevieve Leffel, until her passing in April 1975. Genevieve had a daughter, Marianne, who Louie adopted in 1972. In May 1986, he married the second love of his life, Betty Roberts, of Greenwood, and they were married until her passing in December 2021. Louie was a member of the Catholic Church in Willard and St. John’s in Marshfield. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, and just tinkering on anything he could find in the garage and outside to keep him busy. He also enjoyed beer and the camaraderie with his brothers and friends.
Louie will be remembered as a loving father, wonderful husband, and great friend. Those who knew him best will miss his good humor and quirky sayings.
He is lovingly survived by his daughter, Marianne Rogers (and her special friend, Jerry Tuchsher) of Marshfield; many nieces and nephews; and his second wife’s daughters: Bobbie (Dan) Sheild, and Lynn Hoeper. Louie will be truly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Maria Perko; first wife, Genevieve (Leffel) Perko; second wife, Betty (Roberts) Perko; and nine brothers and sisters.
His daughter, Marianne, would like to thank her special friend, Jerry, for all the kind, loving care he gave to Louie while he lived at their home in Marshfield from October 2020 until January 2022. Jerry opened his home during COVID so Louie could enjoy his last years with his daughter, where she could take care of him. Also, thanks to the Marshfield Medical Center and Three Oaks in Marshfield, and a special thank you to Wells Nature View in Marshfield for all the loving care given to her father.

My father had an address change, he’s no longer at the old, His address is Heaven’s Gate, where the streets are made of gold. No more waiting for the mailman to bring mail up to his door, He has become a messenger to those who went before. My father no longer feels the pain, no doctors now to see, For at his new address, his body is set free. Those arthritic hands, those eyes so dim are things that now are past, For at his new address, his health will always last.
