Helen M. Dums, 95, of Medford, formerly Rib Lake, passed away Friday, Feb. 4, 2022 under the care of Hope Hospice at Our House Senior Living where she has resided for the past seven years. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 11 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford, with Fr. Jayanna Kanna officiating. Visitation will take place at the church from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at Historic St. Ann’s Cemetery in the township of Greenwood.

Helen was born on Feb. 3, 1927 in the township of Greenwood to John H. and Margaret (Kolecheck) Dums. She attended Highland Elementary School and graduated from Rib Lake High School in 1944. After graduation she worked four years at Western Electric building telephones. Helen worked as a domestic servant for families in Milwaukee and Chicago until she enrolled at the Taylor County Teachers College, graduating in 1956. She continued her education at UW-Stevens Point, receiving a Bachelor of Education in 1963. She taught for 32 years at Washington, Rib River, Chelsea and Clearview Schools.

Helen was very active in her faith community at Historic St. Ann’s and Assumption Catholic Church Chelsea. She was a member of the Chequamegon Bird Club and Taylor County Historical Society. She spent many hours tending the flowers and vegetables in her garden. She loved history, reading, and hosting family parties. She enjoyed bus tour vacations with her sister Marcella and trips to Canada for fishing and blueberry picking.

Helen is survived by one brother, John J. Dums (Mary) of Rib Lake; and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Donald (Helen Woolsey) Dums, Bernard (Hilda) Dums, and Joseph Dums; and sisters, Margaret (Lloyd) Vickers, Marcella Dums, and Regina (Louis) Czerniak. She was also preceded in death by one niece, Karen Veltus.

Memorial donations in Helen’s name may be given to either Holy Rosary Religious Education or Historic St. Ann’s.

The family would like to thank Our House Senior Living and Hope Hospice for the care Helen received.
