Paid obituary 115718 Elaine A. Gumz, age 82, of Colby, passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022, at The Waterford at Colby with her family by her side.

A funeral service was Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022, at Christ Lutheran Church in Abbotsford at 11 a.m. Pastor Don Bruce presided. Visitation was 9-11 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. Interment followed at the Dorchester Cemetery. Live stream was available for those unable to attend on the Maurina Schilling Funeral Home Facebook page or after the service anytime on Facebook or the website. Pallbearers were Dustin Gumz, Nathan Kunze, Ryan Preisinger, Tyler Kunze, Braiden Johnson and Terry Fiedler.

Elaine was born on March 1, 1939, to Henry and Frieda (Weinke) Peter. Elaine married Leonard Gumz at United Church of Christ in Dorchester on Aug. 3, 1957. After marriage, they resided in Marshfield for a couple of years, where she worked at a bakery. They then bought a farm in 1961 and that’s where they raised their three children, however her love for baking remained, making her famous filled donuts and decorated cakes for all the family occasions.

She also loved the outdoors, including having numerous flower beds and a big garden. She took pride in her beautiful yard. She also enjoyed traveling, casino trips, shopping, playing cards, and always had a puzzle on the table. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. She is lovingly survived by her children: Duwayne (Susan) Gumz of Colby, Bryan (Rita) Gumz of Medford and Tammy (Philip) Kunze of Abbotsford; nine grandchildren: Wendy Johnson, Dustin (Cody) Gumz, Shari (Ryan) Preisinger, Jason Carlson, Keith Gumz, Melissa Gumz, Nathan Kunze, Tyler Kunze, and Melanie Kunze; and ten great-grandchildren: Braiden, Madalynn and Kylee Johnson; Kynley, Ashtyn and Cameron Gumz; Remie and Croix Preisinger, Emma Kuchera and Aaron Gumz; three sisters-in-law: Verna Peter, Betty (Jerome) Gebert and Dawn Gumz.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leonard (2010); a sister, Adeline (Eugene) Fiedler; a brother, Alfred Peter; brothers-in-law: Alfred (Janet) Gumz , William Gumz Jr. and Eugene (Barabara) Gumz; and a sister-in-law, Esther (Glen) Kreklau.
