Kenneth Scheffler Kenneth Scheffler

Kenneth W. Scheffler, age 93, of Athens, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021, at the Athenian in Athens under the tender care of hospice.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens. The Rev. Mark Schwalenberg will preside. Interment to follow at the Athens Lutheran Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome from 9 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the church. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford is entrusted with the arrangements.

Ken was born on Dec. 28, 1927, the son of Harold and Elsie (Ewan) Scheffler in Appleton. The family lived in Eau Claire and Curtiss, then moved to Athens where he lived with his Grandma and Grandpa Ewan and worked on their farm. He graduated from Athens High School in 1946.

Ken was united in marriage to Bernice Behrend on Oct. 8, 1949. They had four children. They farmed in the Town of Johnson from 1950 until 1983. Along with farming, Ken drove truck for Tolk Trucking and County Concrete. Together they enjoyed snowmobiling, playing cards and their trips to the cottage in Eagle River. He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church. They also enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Bernice preceded him in death on Sept. 8, 2005. On Oct. 21, 2006, Ken married Betty Bunkelman after being friends for many years.

When Ken was young, he formed the polka band, Ken Scheffler and the Relatives. They performed for many parties, weddings and other events. Whenever the relatives got together they would always sing together. It was beautiful! Among his favorite pastimes was hunting and fishing. He always seemed to catch the most fish and always got his deer. Ken especially loved being with his children and grandchildren. They were his greatest joy!

Ken is survived by his wife, Betty; four children: Judy (Virgil) Weiler, Nancy (Adnay) Luetschwager, Randy (Sheila) Scheffler and Sandy Verpoorten, all of Athens; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernice; and his siblings: Dorothy Krueger, Mike Scheffler, Marion Kroll and David Scheffler.

Memorials can be designated to Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Staff of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. Also to the wonderful staff at the Athenian Living Assisted Living Community.
