Earl Mavis Earl Mavis

Earl Robert Mavis, 88, Greenwood, passed away from COVID-19 on Saturday, Oct. 23, 2021, at Marshfield Medical Center in Weston. A celebration of Earl’s life will be held at a later date.

Earl was born on Oct. 29, 1932, in Barrington, Ill., the son of August and Arlene (nee Slater) Mavis. He was raised on a farm in Marengo, Ill. He attended Marengo schools and graduated from Marengo Community High School in 1950. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Murphy, on Nov. 8, 1952, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Marengo. Earl served as a radio operator in the Korean War, stationed in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1955. Upon his return, he and Dorothy set up a dairy farm on River Road in rural Marengo. They remained on this farm until 1978, when they bought a dairy farm in Greenwood. They enjoyed playing pinochle, square dancing, spending time with many friends and neighbors, and inviting family to the farm on a regular basis. After 20 years of farming in rural Greenwood, they retired and moved to a new home in town. Earl always had to keep busy and needed to get a job because he just couldn’t sit around. He worked for Weather Shield in Greenwood for many years, as one of their best bay/bow window guys. Earl was always working -- mowing the lawn, tending to his gorgeous flower gardens, making wine, moving snow for the neighborhood, helping with building projects, or tending to his beautiful orchids. He had the most amazing work ethic and passed it on to all of his children. He was the best dad ever.

Earl is survived by his children: Kathy (Jim) Mechler of Belvidere, Ill., Deb (Jim) Barr of Willard, Bob (Kelly Masek) Mavis of Augusta, Deanna (Greg) Heiman of Neillsville, and Dave (Anne) Mavis of Greenwood; 11 grandchildren; 18 greatgrandchildren; and nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Earl was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his parents; his sisters: Marion, Pearl, Helen, Betty and Patsy; his brother, Glen; and his granddaughter, Michelle Montgomery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Marshfield Medical Center in Weston for their excellent care and compassion for our Dad.
