Kenneth Lee Scheithauer, 90, of Medford, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021 while surrounded by his loving family at Aspirus A funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Monday, Sept. 13, 2021 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, town of Greenwood, with Rev. Kenneth Bittorf officiating. Military honors by the United States Marine Corps and the Medford Area Military Honors Team followed. Visitation was from 12 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m., Monday at the church.
Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery, Rib Lake.
He was born Feb. 7, 1931 in Medford to Marcella (Jarchow) and Joseph Scheithauer. He attended school in the Town of Greenwood. Upon finishing school, he started in the work force beginning with helping on his family farm. Ken was one of the hardest working men you would ever meet, a “jackof- all-trades.” From furniture upholstering, to road construction and wood working, to his specialty as a concrete finisher. He retired in 1993 from Weather Shield as a glass plant manager, but continued his days of working as a concrete finisher with Custom Concrete in Medford until his health would not allow him to continue.
Ken served in United States Marine Corps with the 1st Marine Division. He enlisted on Jan. 13, 1951, just weeks after the 1st Marine Division suffered heavy casualties (approx 18,000) in the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, against 7 Enemy Divisions of Red Chinese Forces (who suffered more than 50,000 casualties) in temperatures reaching below -40 degrees Fahrenheit. After multiple denied requests to get orders to Korea, Ken married his sweetheart. Just weeks later he received orders to Korea where he served in multiple war campaigns. After his tour of duty he was honorably discharged on the 7th of January 1954. Sergeant Ken Scheithauer’s military awards consist of the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 bronze stars and United Nations Service Medal.
On Sept. 5, 1952, Ken and Geraldine “Gerri” Welter were united in marriage in Oceanside, California where Ken was stationed. She preceded him in death on May 20, 2019.
He was a faithful, lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church; was a dedicated member of the Medford VFW Post 5729; and a member of the NRA.
Ken loved to watch sports. He was an avid Brewers, Packers, Bucks and Badgers fan, but throughout his life, he enjoyed most of all watching his kids and grandkids play ball and let’s not forget the Interwald Dairyland Baseball team! He was a talented woodworker and loved spending time in his shop making lawn ornaments and furniture. He and Gerri had a nice little business going making beanbag boxes. Their sets have been sold all over the area and known to be some of the best quality sets around!
He is survived by his five children, Gary (Sandy) Scheithauer of Medford, Jayne (Linda O’Reilly) Scheithauer of Marshfield, Mary (Pat Werner) Peterson of Medford, Amy (Matt Wilson) Spurgeon of Reedsburg, Jon (Jill) Scheithauer of Medford; siblings, Herbert (Ruth) Scheithauer, Alice Smola, Allen (Linda) Scheithauer, Dennis (Cathy) Scheithauer, all of Rib Lake, Barb Steinman of Fond du Lac; sisters-in-law, Delores Scheithauer and Laverne Scheithauer, both of Medford; grandchildren, Erin (Paul Strebig) Peterson, Josh (fiancé Camille) Peterson, Nathan (Jenna) Scheithauer, Nicole (Dustin) Misener, Joe (Morgan Spoehr) Scheithauer, Cameron Scheithauer; great-grandchildren, Kiernan, Kai, Eden, Luka, Caellum, and Grayson; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Gerri, he was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Mark; brothers, Joseph, Marvin, and Robert Scheithauer; sisters, Bernadine Brahmer, Durana Dentz, and Vera Hoffman; sisters-in-law, Marcy Scheithauer and Nora Welter; brothers-in-law, Jim Smola, Lavern Hoffman, Chester Brahmer and Don Welter; and his beloved dog, Buddy.
