Abbotsford High School senior Mya Ruesch has been named the Abbotsford Lions Club Student of the Quarter for the third quarter of the 2020-21 school year.

Ruesch carries a rigorous class schedule that includes NTC dualcredit English, Games with Implements, independent art and design, trigonometry, chemistry and mixed choir. She has participated in many co-curricular activities, including National Honor Society, Student Senate (current vice president), FFA, FBLA, FCCLA, BLAST and show choir. She is a member of the volleyball, basketball and track teams.

Student Senate advisor Sara Halpin highly recommended her for the Student of the Quarter award.

“Mya is an extraordinary student,” Halpin stated. “She is dedicated to her academics and her extracurricular activities by putting in 100 percent effort in each area. She has role modeled leadership and collaboration; I have witnessed many examples of her diligence, work ethic, and willingness to serve her community and school. There is no better candidate for this award than Mya.”

Ruesch’s volunteerism attests to her belief in community service. She has been actively involved in assisting at the Abbotsford Lions brunches and tree planting projects, dairy breakfasts, and youth basketball, volleyball and wrestling tournaments.

When asked to identify an outstanding feature of the community, Mya applauds the Abbotsford School District staff and community.

“The Abbotsford school staff is always there for us, whether it’s in the classroom or through our many sports activities. Teachers are constantly checking to be sure we are doing well mentally; they stay late/ come early to help and encourage us with our academic achievements and athletic performances. Before COVID-19, we took for granted that many of our fans were community members who didn’t even have children or grandchildren to watch; yet they came to show their support as a community. They attended and supported our concerts, sporting events, club events and never-ending fundraisers.”

When asked to define a major world problem, Ruesch responded, “I would confront bullying; I want everyone to know that they matter. Bullying is a major world problem today, especially on the internet. Social media plays a big role in it; most times people are too afraid to stand up for themselves and others. I want to live in a world where everyone gets along and is happy in the person they were created to be. Everyone has a purpose in life, but sometimes people can’t see that greatness because they are put down by others. Life is short; don’t break people down to make yourself feel better. Cheer people up and feel accomplished.”

Mya babysits and works on the family farm. After graduation, she plans to attend UW-River Falls, majoring in elementary education with plans to become a second grade teacher.

Mya is the daughter of David and Rebecca Ruesch of rural Abbotsford.
