Sophie J. Gonia

1923-2020

Sophie J. Gonia, 98 of Gilman, died peacefully with her son by her side, on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020 at the Cornell Care Center. A private Mass will take place at a later date with Inurnment in Meadowbrook Catholic Cemetery. She was born on Sept. 23, 1923 in Chicago, Ill. to the late Ignatius and Anna (Kolosa) Ratulowski. Sophie grew up in Chicago and married Anthony Gonia at St. Martha’s Catholic Church. The couple moved to Gilman in 1980. Sophie was a waitress for the Black Forest Chalet in Morton Grove, Ill. for many years.

Sophie was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

She is survived by her son, Anthony “Butch” Gonia of Gilman; and her nieces and nephews.

Sophie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anthony (1993); her brothers, Joseph, John, Edward and Andrew; and her sisters, Helen, Mary, Ann and Irene.
