1945-2020
Milton “Pete” M. Story, 74, of Eau Claire, formerly of the Hannibal area, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2020 at Care Partners Assisted Living in Eau Claire. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020 at Thorp Funeral Home. Pastor John Sindler will officiate and burial will follow in the Hannibal Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mason Chmielowiec, Myles Chmielowiec, Skylar Halida, Dakota Halida, Travis Warren, Cole Nelson, Todd Warren and James Millikin. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Sheldon American Legion Post No. 316. Visitation will be held at Thorp Funeral Home, on Tuesday, from 9 a.m. until time of the service.
Milton Melcher Story was born on Dec. 31, 1945 in Jump River, the son of Leo and Lillian (Wry) Story. He was raised on the family farm and received his education in area schools, graduating from Gilman High School in 1964. After high school, Pete moved to Illinois and worked for Bell Telephone for a year and a half. He enlisted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 12, 1965 and served until his honorable discharge on Dec. 1, 1967. After his discharge, Pete returned to Wisconsin and worked at Peavey’s Lumber Mill in Ladysmith, and later at Presto Industries in Eau Claire. Pete was united in marriage to Rosemary J. Chmielowiec at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, in Tony, on June 14, 1969. They later divorced. He purchased the grocery store in Hannibal, in addition to working at the Hannibal School as a janitor. After selling the store, Pete went to work for Northeast Asphalt, (later Payne and Dolan Road Construction Company), as a heavy equipment operator.
He moved to the Antigo area and spent several years there, enjoying the friends he made.
Pete enjoyed playing sports and bowling in his earlier years. He also liked playing cards, watching sports, going to the casino and spending time with his family and friends.
He was a member of the Sheldon American Legion Post No. 316, and Wisconsin Operating Engineers Local 139.
Pete is survived by his four children, Mark (Gail) Chmielowiec of Rib Lake, Kelly (James) Millikin of Medford, Becky (Todd) Warren of Lakeville, Minn., and Trenton (Brittany) Story of Boyd; 11 grandchildren, Olivia, Mason, Leah, Myles, Skylar, Dakota, Hunter, Travis, Samantha (Jacob) Ring, Tucker, and Blake; five great-grandchildren, Eli, Brock, Ellianna, Fynlie, and Braxton; six siblings, Carol Story of Lynnwood, Wash., Masey (Dean) Thorkelson of Lynnwood, Wash., Dorvin (Marilyn) Story of Sheldon, Debbie (Bruce) Kujuwa of Eau Claire, Jeane Story of Altoona, and Peggy (Chuck) Warner of Lake Hallie; one brother-in-law, Tom Nelson of Medford; many nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Darrell and Duane Story; and four sisters, Ellen Hoeck, Marie Story, Gladys Wiacek, and Hazel Nelson.
