Duane Syth
Duane L. Syth, 92, Greenwood, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020, at Neillsville Care & Rehab. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenwood. Rev. Leo Johnson officiated, and burial followed in the parish cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Greenwood American Legion Post #238.
Duane Louis Syth was born on May 27, 1928, in Greenwood, the son of Jerrold B. and Leona F. (nee Weber) Syth. He was raised on the family farm and received his education in the Greenwood area. On Nov. 6, 1945, at the age of 17, Duane enlisted into the U.S. Navy, and served until his honorable discharge on July 28, 1949. After returning home from the service, he worked at a service station in Milwaukee. Duane was united in marriage on June 13, 1951, to Phyllis J. Rondorf at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Greenwood. They lived in Milwaukee after their marriage, until moving to Santa Clara, Calif., in 1960. Duane started his own business, S& S Plastics, which he operated until becoming employed with North American Van Lines driving truck. In 1970, he started his own remodeling and general contracting business, which he ran until retiring in 1993. They moved back to Greenwood, where Duane kept busy with his rental properties. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, had served as the president of the Santa Clara High School Booster Club, and coached Pop Warner football and Little League baseball in California. In retirement, he especially enjoyed going to local sporting events.
Duane is survived by his children: Donna Boone of San Jose, Calif., Bradley (Michele) Syth of Santa Cruz, Calif., Steven (Jean) Syth of Livermore, Calif., Cheryl (Roger) Gorella of Fresno, Calif., Rodney Syth of Birch Tree, Mo., Brian Syth of San Jose, Calif., and Patty (Bill) Bright of Greenwood; 15 grandchildren; 12 greatgrandchildren; three sisters: Geri Syth of Neillsville, Rita (Norman) Mayenschein of Greenwood, and Sue Brockman of Greenville; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis, on Aug. 29, 2014; and two brothers: Ronald and Bernard Syth.
