Reports of Area Deaths

1934-2020

Jeanine Hodowanic, 86, of Gilman, died on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2020 at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Father Vijay Kumar officiating. Burial will follow in St. John’s Orthodox Cemetery in Huron. Saturday visitation will start with a Rosary at 9 a.m and continue until the time of the service at the church.

Jeanine was born on Feb. 24, 1934 in Stanley to the late Peter and Kathryn (Hodowanic) Leja. She grew up in the Huron area and graduated from Stanley High. On Aug. 21, 1952 she was united in marriage to Steve Hodowanic in Milwaukee. The couple moved to the town of Aurora and raised their family there. In 1999 Jeanine moved to Gilman where she’s lived since.

Mom had a passion for cooking and baking. If you stopped in she always had a pot of coffee on. If you were lucky you might be able to get some of her scrumptious freshly baked breads, brownies, cookies and pies. She could have opened up her own coffee shop “I Dream of Jeannie’s” she was “famously” known for her pierogis that were out of this world. She could have turned that into a business. Everyone was “always’” welcome to stop in anytime to grab a cup of joe with her and some sweet confections.

Jeanie loved to garden and plant flowers. Picking berries was another one of her passions. You knew that if she came back early, that there probably was a bear or two in the area. “You are back early, ‘bears,’ yep.” Mom was an active member in the Rosary Club at Saints Peter and Paul Church in Gilman. She would sell raffle tickets for the church bazaar. She would gladly volunteer her time to her church which she adored. Mom was generous, loving and kind to everyone she met. Never asking for anything in return. She saw the good in everyone. She kept us laughing every day.

Mom was loved by “all” and will be “greatly” missed by “all”.

She is survived by her children, Karen Miller of Thorp, Steve Hodowanic of Gilman, Lori Hodowanic of Vadnais Heights, Minn. and Lois Hodowanic of Gilman; grandchildren, Perry, Alecia, Ryan and Audrey Swensen, Aiden Henke, Trisha (Gary) Thompson, Kim (Willie) Anderson and Ken, Kevin, Terry and Tony McCubbins; and her great-grandchildren, Kali Anderson, Brock and Jaden Trott and Oliver Phelps.

Jeanine was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; her parents; her daughter, Sharon; her granddaughter, Andrea Trott; her brother, Harold Leja, and her sisters, Delores Cox and Marilyn Lis.

Plombon Funeral Service-Gilman assisted the family.
