Helen Severson
Helen L. Severson, 92, Loyal, passed away on Friday, Aug. 7, 2020, at Marshfield Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, Aug. 14, at Missionary Baptist Church in Greenwood. Rev. Geoff Smith and Rev. Dave Sommerfeld will officiate, and burial will follow in the Greenwood City Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Rich Much, Glynda Gosse, Jason Severson, Travis Severson, Tim Thomas and Ian Floyd Jr. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until time of service.
Helen Lorraine Thomas was born on Dec. 18, 1927, in the town of Bern, Marathon County, to Melvin M. and Altah A. (nee Sischo) Thomas. She was raised and received her education in Clark County, and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1946. Helen married Lester W. Severson on June 8, 1946, at Grace United Methodist Church in Greenwood. She farmed with her husband and raised their family in the town of Beaver. After selling the farm later in life, they built their current home on 80 acres. She was married to her husband, Lester, for 71 years until his passing on Oct. 26, 2017. She had many interests, but especially loved spending time with her family and friends, sewing, cooking, baking, and playing cards.
Helen will be dearly missed by her children: Kathy (Richard) Much of Greenwood, Dale (Kathy) of Curtiss, and Richard of Loyal; her daughter-in-law: Joan Severson of Greenwood; 14 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; one brother: Dale (Crystal) Thomas of Greenwood; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester; two sons: Robert, on June 20, 2001, and Kenneth, on Feb. 18, 2017; two daughters-in-law: Lisa Severson, on July 27, 2010, and June Severson, on April 2, 2016; one grandson: Jeffery Severson; two brothers: Frank and Ralph Thomas; and one sister: Geneva Olson.
