By Ginna Young Meeting on Lake Holcombe’s court, the Chieftains and Cornell Chiefs clashed, Feb. 11, in what was also senior night for the home team.

‘On this night of honoring seniors, we came out strong defensively and that carried over into our oense," said Lake Holcombe coach Dave Engel.

Sophomore Emmit Johnson and senior Brian Strzok lead the way for the Chieftains, on oense and defense. "The real dierence in the game, was inside, our bigs were able to dominate the boards," said Engel. "On of fense, we were able to isolate Connor Kane and take ad- vantage of some mismatches." Lake Holcombe took a 31-19 lead into halftime and while Cornell tried valiantly to catch up, the second half was nearly a repeat of the first and the match went to the Chieftains, 63-36.

“I had the chance to coach Cornell’s core group earlier in their basketball career and I’m glad to see that Jon (Hetke, Cornell coach) had them well prepared," said En -

gel. "I just don't think the depth was there." On Lake Holcombe’s side, Strzok led, with 25 points, with Johnson right behind him, with 24. Kane followed that with eight points, while junior Brody Miller had 4 and senior Trent Lee chipped in with 2 points.

For Cornell, junior Carson Stipek notched 15 points on the night, with junior Grady Abbott coming up with 7 points, while sophomore Bryce DeJongh had 6. Senior Hunter Anders added 3 points to the mix and sophomore Eddie Woodford rounded out the scoring with 2.

“I thought the team we saw had came a long ways from the team we faced earlier this year," said Engel. "Carson has come a long ways over this year and it’s good to see. They're going to be a tough team over the next two years."

Lake Holcombe senior Trent Lee vied for a rebound with Birchwood, Jan. 31, in a home match with their conference opponent.
