Without more help, Cornell Fair will be thing of the past

By Ginna Young Remember the excitement you felt as a child, waiting for the community fair, opening the piggy bank and standing in line for carnival rides? How about those corn dogs, cotton candy, cheese curds and fresh lemonade?

Well, the Stacker City Fair Committee wants to have that feeling continue for generations to come, but in order to do so, more people are needed to make the Cornell Community Fair a reality.

“I want all of our kids to have those same experiences,” said committee member Steve Turany. “Some say that local fairs are outdated, a thing of the past. I say there are things from our childhood and our history, that are worth preserving and nurturing. Our local fair is certainly one of them.”

The committee is in need of new people and new ideas, to make the annual event a success. Currently, there are only three fair members left to plan and carry out the three-day event.

Realizing something has to be done, a community meeting has been called for Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m., at the Cornell City Council chambers. Anyone is welcome to attend, to give input or to volunteer their time.

Many don’t understand the components that go into putting on a threeday event, such as lining up bands, finding entertainment, making posters, managing social posts, ensuring there are vendors with food and beverages – even something as simple as getting money for the cash drawers takes time.

That’s why it’s imperative for community members to step up to help or the fair is in very real danger of going away.

“If just a few more people pitch in just a little time, we can make our fair as fun as it was in the ‘old’ days,” said Turany.
