Tutors needed to fill space at the Cornell Elementary

Math Corps is on the hunt for 30 tutors, to place in nine Wisconsin cities, including the Cornell School District, across kindergarten through eighth grade.

The AmeriCorps tutoring program, which launched in Wisconsin, in 2023, places tutors at local schools to provide students extra math support. Over the course of the program’s first school year, in the state, 254 students were served – that’s nine tutors conducting more than 9,000 tutoring sessions in Wisconsin alone.

This, as Wisconsin struggles to lift math proficiency rates above 33 percent. Math proficiency is linked to high school graduation, college enrollment and even lifetime earnings.

Students who are ready for algebra by the end of eighth grade, are much more likely to excel in school and in their future careers.

“We want to give our students a strong start, beginning in kindergarten,” said Itzel Galindo, executive director of Wisconsin programs. “We know tutoring works.”

Tutors work with students in small group settings, supporting their needs through evidence-based math strategies, math games and supplemental skill-building. The tutors serve on-site, at local schools, 25-35 hours a week. As AmeriCorps members, they receive a stipend equivalent, plus an amount to pay for college tuition or student loans.

Those who are 55 or older, may choose to gift their education award to their child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child. Many tutors also qualify for additional benefits, like free health insurance and childcare assistance.

Math Corps provides great training and ongoing coaching – no tutoring experience is required. Candidates should apply now, to begin service in January 2025. Anyone interested is encouraged to learn more and apply at join.readingandmath.org.
